Arts Masterclass

Friday, 22 July 2016, 9am to 12pm

Bhangra Dance

Bhangra is a lively music and dance that originated from the Punjab region in South Asia. The lyrics of Bhangra songs reflect the long and clamorous history of Punjab. Bhangra is usually accompanied by dance and it started off as a part of celebrations. In the past thirty years, Bhangra has gained global popularity, both as a traditional form and as a fusion with genres such as hiphop.

Chinese Paper Cutting

Paper-Cut is a very distinctive visual art of the Chinese handicrafts. Chinese paper-cutting is the first type of paper-cutting design, since the invention of paper by Cai Lun during the Han Dynasty. This art form later spread to other parts of the world, each adopting their own cultural styles. With an engraving knife or a pair of scissors, you will cut a paper, gently to make your very own paper-cut! You can use it to decorate your home just like the Chinese do.

Batik Painting

Batik originated from many countries in Asia like Indonesia and Malaysia, each with their own styles. Batik is a crafted fabric that involves waxing and dyeing. Waxing involves outlining the drawings with wax, which will prevent colours from different parts of the fabric from mixing. This will allow various colours to be side by side yet do not mix, turning a plain white cloth into a work of art!

Vocal Percussions

Vocal percussion is the art of creating sounds with one’s mouth that imitate, or serve the same purpose as a percussion instrument. You might think that this is similar to beatboxing, but it is not! Vocal percussions create primarily drum-kits and hand percussion sounds while beatboxing produces electronic drum-kit and non-drum sounds such as scratching and synthesisers. This class will be conducted by Mr Peter Huang from a Singaporean a cappella group.
